Product Description

Filament Testing and Small-Batch Production Call for an Affordable, Precise Extruder

A filament developer does not start with a 20 kg/h production line. Neither does a university lab, a filament start-up, or a 3D printing service bureau that wants to test a new color or a new formula before committing to volume. The problem is that most small extruders on the market are either too imprecise to be useful — diameters drift, roundness suffers, winding tangles — or too expensive for what they deliver.

What the lab and small-batch producer actually needs is a desktop-level filament extruder machine that is affordable enough to buy, precise enough to trust, and automatic enough to run without a full-time operator. It must validate a formula quickly, produce a few hundred grams for a customer sample, and scale the same recipe later — without re-learning a completely different process.

The Chenxing Mini 3D Printer Filament Extruder Machine (model SJ-25) is engineered for exactly this gap. It is a complete small plastic extrusion machine for 3D filament — main extruder, die, hot/cold water tank, puller, laser gauge, and winder — on a compact stainless steel desktop footprint. It produces 1–2 kg per hour of filament with perfect tolerance of ±0.03 mm, and even ±0.01 mm, runs under a PLC full-automatic control system, and comes with overseas installation service and low maintenance built in. It processes ABS, PLA, PA, HIPS, PET, and PETG — the materials most often tested and produced in small batches.

This page explains how the mini filament extruder works, what it includes, and how it compares with the full-scale filament line — so you can choose the right stage of automation for your business.

How the Mini 3D Filament Extruder Works

The mini 3D printer filament extruder machine is a complete six-module production chain. Every module is compact, but each plays the same role as on an industrial line: convert resin pellets into round, accurate, neatly wound filament.

Step 1 — SJ-25 Main Extruder (0.75 kW, 3 Heating Zones)

The SJ-25 main extruder is the heart of the machine. A 0.75 kW drive turns the screw, transporting the pellets through three heating zones that melt the material progressively and homogenize it before the die. The small screw size and three-zone heating give the machine the thermal precision that small filaments demand: a stable melt is the precondition for a stable diameter. The machine is fed with dried pellets — for moisture-sensitive materials such as PETG and PA, pairing the mini extruder with a compact drying stage is recommended, using the STG-U hopper drier / plastic resin dryer, the 750A dehumidifying dryer where lower dew point is required, the 201A/J conveying integrated crystal dehumidification dryer for crystalline polymers, or the compact 530A crystal dryer for small-batch drying.

Step 2 — 1.75 mm and 3.0 mm Mould (38CrMoAlA)

The melt is pued through the 1.75 mm and 3.0 mm mould, manufactured from 38CrMoAlA steel — a nitriding alloy known for wear resistance and long service life. The die is the dimension gate of the machine: it forms the strand at the target diameter before any downstream correction. One mould set serves both 1.75 mm (the FDM standard) and 3.0 mm, and the machine is capable of producing filament from 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm in diameter, so a lab can cover the main FDM sizes with one tool.

Step 3 — Hot and Cold Water Tank (800 mm, Two Stages, 300 W Pump)

The strand enters the 800 mm two-stage water tank: a hot stage followed by a cold stage, driven by a 300 W water pump. The two-stage sequence cools the filament gradually — the hot stage relaxes the melt and prevents the strand from cooling too fast and becoming brittle, while the cold stage brings it to a stable temperature for measurement. This staged cooling protects roundness and prevents the internal stress that causes filament to break during printing. Tank temperature is adjusted per material, following the same principle used on the production line, where ABS runs approximately 85°C and PLA approximately 60°C in the heating stage.

Step 4 — Two Wheels Puller

The two wheels puller hauls the cooled filament away from the water tank at a controlled speed. The puller speed, together with extruder output, determines the final diameter — increasing pull speed thins the filament, decreasing it thickens the strand. The puller is the mechanical actuator of the diameter control loop and keeps the line moving steadily through measurement and winding.

Step 5 — Laser X (Diameter Measurement)

The Laser X gauge measures the filament diameter dynamically as it passes. Combined with the control system, it holds the diameter to ±0.03 mm, and even ±0.01 mm — precision that lets the user verify a formula or a color masterbatch with confidence. The measurement also drives the small corrections that keep the finied spool consistent from start to end.

Step 6 — Single Spool Winder (0.3 N Tension)

At the end of the chain, the single spool winder winds the finied filament onto a spool with 0.3 N constant tension. Consistent tension and tidy layering mean the spool feeds cleanly into a printer — the same neat winding principle as the industrial line, scaled to small spools. The finied product is ready for customer sampling or small-batch sale.

The complete process chain — main extruder → mould → hot/cold water tank → two wheels puller → laser gauge → single spool winder — is a full mini filament line on a single desktop footprint, not a bare extruder that leaves you to solve cooling, measuring, and winding yourself.

The selection logic is simple:

For pure resin-to-compound work before filament extrusion, Chenxing also offers the SJ-25/25 laboratory mini single screw extruder and the SJ-30/28 plastic co-extrusion laboratory extruder; these are general extrusion tools, while the mini filament extruder on this page is a complete dedicated filament line with laser measurement and winding built in. Around the filament machine, a complete auxiliary set completes the lab loop: blends and masterbatches are prepared in a high-speed mixer industrial mixer, pellets are conveyed with a VLF powder suction machine, a FSP cruing material suction machine, or a screw feeder automatic feeding machine, ferrous contamination is removed by a CJ magnetic frame hopper magnet, and trial waste is reclaimed with a plastic cruer, an agglomerator film densifier, or a PVC hot-cutting pelletizing line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which materials can the mini 3D printer filament extruder machine process?

The machine processes ABS, PLA, PA, HIPS, PET, and PETG, with the page's product description also confirming PETG among the supported materials for filament testing and production. Temperature settings are matched to the material, following the same staged-cooling principle used on the production-scale line (for example, ABS runs warmer and PLA cooler in the water stage). For materials that require strict drying, pair the machine with a STG-U hopper drier / plastic resin dryer or a 750A dehumidifying dryer.

What filament diameters and tolerances can the mini extruder achieve?

The machine produces filament from 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm in diameter, with a die set covering the two most common sizes — 1.75 mm and 3.0 mm. The Laser X gauge holds the diameter to ±0.03 mm, and even ±0.01 mm, depending on material and running conditions. This covers standard FDM sizes as well as specialty diameters for testing.

Is the mini filament extruder easy to operate for a small lab or start-up?

Yes. The machine runs on a PLC full-automatic control system, so temperature, pull speed, and winding operate as a coordinated automatic sequence. A single operator — a researcher, student, or entrepreneur without extrusion experience — can run consistent trials after a ort training session, and Chenxing's overseas installation service includes on-site setup and operator guidance.

Can the SJ-25 be used for small-batch filament production, not just testing?

Yes. With 1–2 kg/h output, the SJ-25 supports small-batch production as well as testing. It can fill a customer sample order, supply a small retail range, or cover specialty diameters in low volume. When demand grows, the same material recipes can be scaled to the ABS/PETG/PLA 3D filament extrusion line for 20–25 kg/h mass production.

What does the standard configuration of the mini filament extruder include?

The standard configuration includes six modules: the SJ-25 main extruder (0.75 kW, 3 heating zones), the 1.75 mm and 3.0 mm mould (38CrMoAlA), the 800 mm two-stage hot and cold water tank with 300 W pump, the two wheels puller, the Laser X diameter gauge, and the single spool winder with 0.3 N tension. It is a complete mini filament line — nothing extra is required to start testing.
