Product Description

Why PETG Pipe Processing Demands More Than Standard Extrusion

PETG — glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate — looks like ordinary PET, but it behaves very differently in the extruder. It is a copolyester with the transparency of PET, the impact resistance of an engineering plastic, and the easy formability of a processing-friendly resin. It is food-grade and medical-grade safe, which makes it the material of choice for food and beverage packaging tubes, medical catheters and instrument tubes, cosmetic packaging, toys, stationery, and decorative transparent pipes.

But PETG is also a hygroscopic material. It absorbs moisture from the air, and that moisture is the enemy of a transparent pipe. Extrude PETG without proper drying and the result is predictable: bubbles in the wall, silver streaks on the surface, and a haze that destroys the optical clarity the material is chosen for. Standard hot-air drying is not enough — PETG must be dried with low-dew-point dehumidification to a very low moisture level before it ever reaches the screw.

And drying is only the first discipline. The melt must be plasticized uniformly, without degradation — because degraded copolyester turns yellow and loses impact strength, and a yellow pipe is a rejected pipe. The melt must flow through a die designed for optical quality, without weld lines or flow marks. The pipe must be sized with precision, because food and medical applications demand tight dimensional tolerances. And the cooling must be managed carefully, because a transparent pipe that is cooled too aggressively develops stress whitening — the pipe goes cloudy under stress.

This is why a PETG pipe is not simply "extruded." It is produced by a line — a coordinated sequence of drying, extrusion, sizing, cooling, haul-off, and cutting — where every stage is engineered for the special requirements of copolyester. The Chenxing PETG Pipe Production Line is built as exactly that: a complete, integrated system for crystal-clear PETG pipe, from dry pellets at the inlet to finished, cut-to-length pipe at the outlet.

Stage 1 — Dehumidifying Drying

PETG pellets are hygroscopic: they absorb atmospheric moisture, and the absorbed moisture degrades the melt during extrusion — producing bubbles, silver streaks, and haze. The line therefore starts with a low-dew-point dehumidifying drying system, integrated with the extruder and sized for the line's throughput. The pellets are dried to the low moisture level PETG requires before they are conveyed to the screw. An automatic loading system can be included, so the drying hopper is refilled without manual intervention.

Stage 2 — Single-Screw Extrusion

The dried PETG is plasticized in a single-screw extruder with a screw designed for copolyester and precise temperature control along the barrel. The screw design balances shear and residence time so the melt is homogeneous and the polymer does not degrade. This is the stage where yellowing is won or lost: controlled temperature and residence time keep the copolyester clear and impact-resistant.

Stage 3 — Pipe Die

The melt passes through a pipe die with spiral flow channels, which distributes the melt uniformly around the die circumference. A uniform distribution means no weld lines and no flow marks — the pipe emerges with the optical quality that PETG is chosen for. The die geometry is matched to the pipe diameter and wall thickness of the order.

Stage 4 — Vacuum Sizing

The extruded pipe enters a vacuum sizing tank, where the external diameter is calibrated by vacuum against a sizing sleeve. Vacuum sizing holds the pipe to its nominal diameter with tight roundness and dimensional tolerance — essential for food packaging tubes, medical tubing, and fittings that must assemble precisely.

Stage 5 — Cooling

The sized pipe passes through multi-stage cooling water tanks. Cooling is controlled stage by stage so the pipe is brought down gradually and evenly. Gradual cooling prevents stress whitening — the cloudiness that appears in transparent pipe when internal stresses are frozen into the wall. The result stays crystal-clear.

Stage 6 — Haul-Off and Cutting

A caterpillar haul-off unit pulls the pipe at a speed synchronized with the extruder output, holding the wall thickness constant. At the end of the line, the pipe is cut to fixed length by a cutting unit or coiled, depending on the pipe diameter and the order type. The end stage is automated, so the line runs continuously with minimal labor.

Key Components of the PETG Pipe Production Line

The Chenxing PETG pipe line is composed of matched modules. Each component is available in multiple sizes, and the complete line configuration — pipe diameter range, capacity, and auxiliary equipment — is customized to the project on request:

Module Function in the PETG Pipe Line
Dehumidifying drying system Low-dew-point drying of hygroscopic PETG pellets before extrusion; automatic loading available
Single-screw extruder Copolyester-designed screw with precise barrel temperature control; uniform, non-degraded melt
Pipe die Spiral-flow melt distribution for uniform wall and optical clarity without weld lines
Vacuum sizing tank External-diameter sizing for roundness and dimensional tolerance
Cooling water tanks Multi-stage controlled cooling to avoid stress whitening in transparent pipe
Caterpillar haul-off Speed-synchronized traction to hold wall thickness constant
Cutting / coiling unit Fixed-length cutting or coiling for the finished pipe

Applications of PETG Pipe

PETG pipe is specified wherever transparency, impact resistance, and safety are required together:

  • Food and beverage packaging tubes — PETG's food-grade safety and clarity make it a preferred packaging material.

  • Medical catheters and instrument tubes — medical-grade PETG is used where clarity and sterilization compatibility matter.

  • Cosmetic packaging — transparent, impact-resistant tubes for premium cosmetic presentation.

  • Toys and stationery — clear, safe, and durable transparent components.

  • Decorative transparent pipe — display and decorative applications where optical quality is the product.

  • Industrial and functional tubing — where chemical resistance, clarity, and impact strength are useful together.

For each application, the line's drying, extrusion, and sizing configuration is adapted to the pipe specification — pipe diameter, wall thickness, and capacity are customized to the project on request.

Working with the Chenxing Drying and Handling Range

PETG is hygroscopic, so the drying system is central to the line. Chenxing's drying range supports the PETG pipe line at every scale:

Pellet handling around the line uses Chenxing's feeding and conveying equipment: CLF powder suction machines and CLF-L continuous powder suction machines for automatic loading, CSP crushing material suction machines for regrind return, and screw feeders automatic feeding machines for controlled pellet metering. Where the plant recycles its own scrap, plastic crushers reduce rejects for regrind, and a CJ magnetic frame hopper magnet protects the extruder at the feed point.

Choosing the Right Line in the Chenxing Extrusion Family

The PETG pipe line is one member of the Chenxing extrusion family. Each line is engineered for its product form:

Line Product Form Core Characteristics
PETG pipe production line (this page) Transparent copolyester pipe and tube Dehumidifying drying, single-screw extrusion, vacuum sizing, food/medical grade
PVC shelf label strip extrusion line Small-section profile strips Co-extrusion of label strips, compact profile tooling
PVC UV marble sheet making line Decorative sheets Sheet extrusion with three-roll polishing, marble-effect UV finish
Plastic pelletizer machine Pellets Strand pelletizing of compounded materials
PVC hot-cutting pelletizing line Pellets Hot-cut pelletizing for PVC and WPC
Parallel co-rotating twin screw extruder Compounding Twin-screw compounding of filled and modified materials

The family shares Chenxing's material handling ecosystem — drying, conveying, and feeding — but each line's downstream is specific to its product. The PETG pipe line is distinguished by the disciplines of transparent pipe: dehumidifying drying, optical die design, vacuum sizing, and stress-free cooling. For a complete plant, the Advanced Material Processing EPC Project engineers the whole material path — storing, feeding, conveying, weighing, dosing, dehumidifying, drying, and unloading — as one turnkey system around lines like this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PETG and why is it used for pipe?

PETG is glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate, a copolyester that combines the transparency of PET with higher impact resistance and easier processing. It is food-grade and medical-grade safe, chemically resistant, and formable at moderate temperatures. These properties make it the material of choice for food and beverage packaging tubes, medical catheters and instrument tubes, cosmetic packaging, toys, stationery, and decorative transparent pipes.

Why does PETG need dehumidifying drying before extrusion?

PETG is a hygroscopic material — it absorbs moisture from the air, and that moisture degrades the melt during extrusion. Undried PETG produces pipes with bubbles in the wall, silver streaks on the surface, and haze that destroys optical clarity. Hot-air drying is insufficient because it cannot reach the low moisture level PETG requires. The PETG pipe production line therefore starts with a low-dew-point dehumidifying drying system, matched to the extruder throughput, so the pellets are dry before they reach the screw.

What is the typical process flow of the PETG pipe production line?

The flow is: dehumidifying drying of the hygroscopic PETG pellets, single-screw extrusion with a copolyester-designed screw and precise temperature control, pipe die with spiral flow channels, vacuum sizing of the external diameter, multi-stage cooling, caterpillar haul-off synchronized with the extruder, and finally fixed-length cutting or coiling. Every stage is coordinated through one line control system.

How does vacuum sizing ensure pipe accuracy?

Vacuum sizing holds the pipe against a sizing sleeve by vacuum immediately after it leaves the die, calibrating the external diameter while the pipe is still formable. This fixes the nominal diameter, roundness, and dimensional tolerance precisely — the accuracy that food packaging and medical applications require. The sized pipe then cools in the water tanks while maintaining the calibrated dimensions.

Which products can be made on this line?

The line produces transparent PETG pipe and tube for food and beverage packaging, medical catheters and instrument tubes, cosmetic packaging, toys, stationery, decorative transparent pipe, and industrial tubing. The configuration — drying capacity, extruder, die, and end stage — is adapted to the pipe specification and the application's hygiene and tolerance requirements.

What pipe diameters and capacities are available?

The line is available in multiple sizes, and the pipe diameter range, wall thickness, and capacity are customized to the project on request. Chenxing sizes the drying system, extruder, die, sizing, and haul-off to the customer's pipe specification, so the line is built around the order rather than the order forced onto a fixed machine.

How does this line differ from the PVC extrusion lines?

The PVC lines in the Chenxing family — the shelf label strip line and the UV marble sheet line — process PVC, which is not hygroscopic in the same way and does not require the same dehumidifying discipline. PETG is hygroscopic, must be dried to a low moisture level, and must be protected from degradation to preserve clarity and impact strength. The PETG pipe line is therefore engineered around dehumidifying drying, optical die design, vacuum sizing, and stress-free cooling — the specific disciplines of transparent copolyester pipe.
